ChatGPT Traffic Declines for Third Consecutive Month

OpenAI's ChatGPT, the immensely popular AI chatbot introduced in November, experienced a third consecutive monthly decline in website visits in August, though indications suggest that this trend may be stabilizing, as per analytics firm Similarweb.

Global desktop and mobile visits to the ChatGPT website dipped by 3.2% to 1.43 billion in August, following previous monthly declines of roughly 10%. The average duration visitors spent on the site also decreased steadily since March, from an initial average of 8.7 minutes to 7 minutes in August. Nevertheless, there was a slight uptick in worldwide unique visitors in August, with 180.5 million users compared to the previous month's 180 million.

The return of schools to session in September could potentially boost ChatGPT's traffic and usage, with some educational institutions already beginning to incorporate it into their curriculum. In August, U.S. ChatGPT traffic exhibited a modest increase, aligning with the reopening of American schools.

David F. Carr of Similarweb noted, "Students seeking homework help appears to be part of the story: the percentage of younger users of the website dropped over the summer and is now starting to bounce back." ChatGPT sparked widespread interest in generative AI, with users employing it for various daily tasks, including editing and coding.

Remarkably, it achieved 100 million monthly active users just two months after its launch in January. Prior to Meta's Threads launch, it held the distinction of being the fastest-growing consumer application and currently ranks among the top 30 websites worldwide.

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI. It's designed to engage in text-based conversations with users and provide responses that are contextually relevant and coherent. ChatGPT uses a language model called GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) to generate human-like text based on the input it receives. It's been used for a wide range of applications, including answering questions, generating text, assisting with writing, and more. ChatGPT gained popularity for its ability to provide natural-sounding conversational interactions and has been used in customer support, content generation, and various other fields.
