Microsoft Extends Legal Safeguards to Users Facing AI Copyright Infringement Issues

Microsoft has introduced a new policy that offers extensive copyright protections to users of its AI assistant, Copilot. The policy guarantees that users can utilize Copilot services and generated output without the fear of copyright claims. If a third party initiates a copyright infringement lawsuit against a commercial Copilot user, Microsoft will take responsibility for potential legal risks.

The company will defend the customer and cover the cost of adverse judgments or settlements stemming from the lawsuit, as long as the user adhered to Microsoft's built-in guardrails and content filters.

This Copilot Copyright Commitment extends Microsoft's existing intellectual property indemnification coverage to encompass outputs produced by its AI chatbots and AI-powered assistants. The policy is applicable to paid users of Microsoft's products and covers content generated under Microsoft's content filters and in-house safety systems.

Microsoft's commitment to addressing legal issues associated with AI aligns with its broader AI Customer Commitments and AI Assurance Program, designed to assist customers in the responsible use and deployment of AI applications, such as Copilot and Bing Chat Enterprise.

Microsoft's initiative aims to reassure customers that the company will bear the copyright liability associated with its products, alleviating concerns and fostering responsible AI adoption.
